Livestock Shelter Open in Rocky Mount

The East Carolina Agriculture and Education Center has opened its doors as a storm refuge center for livestock including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. This shelter is not designed for horses (see below). All livestock must be tagged (sheep and goats must have a scrapie tag), and owners must provide:
  • Contact information (address, cell phone, and email)
  • List of animals that they are bringing (tag numbers with a brief description)
  • Feed Buckets/Pans
  • Feed/Hay for 3-5 days
  • Pigs, sheep and goats will need to bring shavings/bedding
  • If applicable, halters for sheep and goats

Equine Shelter Information
Horse owners are encouraged to take horses to the Halifax County Horse Complex (address: 54 Dog Pound Rd., Halifax, NC), which has been opened as a Equine Shelter.
In addition, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides this list of equine boarding facilities that will accept horses during an emergency.
