Well Maintenance After Floods

(Updated: Oct. 1, 2024, 9:28 a.m.)

Floodwaters from disasters like hurricanes can be contaminated with hazardous chemicals and bacteria.

If you use well water, it is important to inspect, purge, and disinfect the well and household water lines.

If you suspect your well may be contaminated or if it was submerged in the floods, DO NOT drink the water until you have taken these steps.

For more information, see the Extension publication, After the Flood: Inspect, Purge, and Disinfect Your Well, or contact your local or state health department or local extension agent for specific advice.
