Supporting Latino Communities Impacted by Helene

The remnants of Hurricane Helene devastated mountain communities throughout Western North Carolina, uprooting families and impacting lives across the region's 23 counties and beyond.

Among the roughly 1.2 million residents of WNC, approximately 85,000 are Latino, according to the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management (OBSM). The largest concentration of Latinos can be found in Buncombe County (~22,000), one of the areas hardest hit by Helene.

Latino populations can face a unique set of obstacles along the road to recovery from a major disaster, including language barriers, income disparities and a lack of local support infrastructure, according to the Hispanic Access Foundation.
